Driver Safety
The CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program holds an annual Brake Safety Week scheduled for August 22-29, 2021. During this campaign, commercial vehicle inspectors will conduct brake inspections across the country to identify brake-related violations which can pose a risk to drivers and public safety.
How To Prepare
This year’s Brake Safety Week will have inspectors checking brake systems and brake components for out-of-service conditions and compiling data on brake hoses and tubing (a focus area for this year’s safety week). Here are our recommendations for preparation:
- Make sure your air brake system and all brake components have been recently checked
- Your mechanic should know the size and type of the air brake chamber and the maximum allowable push rod travel for that chamber. Be sure it is properly adjusted
- Inspect all brake hoses and tubing to be sure they are free of leaks or visible damage
- Components such as cotter and clevis pins, should be checked for wear or damage
- Check the slack adjuster; automatic slack adjusters can become worn and faulty
- Test all air lines; be sure brakes are not spongy, soft, or allow the pedal to be depressed too far
These are some of the obvious components that can be flagged during an inspection. Get your brakes check by a professional and avoid a vehicle out-of-service condition. Proactive brake checks and any necessary repairs are important to the safety of the driver, the public, and your transport business.

Dashcam
If one of your fleet vehicles is involved in an accident, it is important to know what happened and why. As a fleet manager, gathering the necessary information about the collision is essential to help prove the innocence of the driver both for insurance purposes and for potential litigation.
Collision Reconstruction
Collision reconstruction is the ability to understand events that occurred before, during, and after a collision. Telematics is extremely useful for this purpose as it provides a complete record of all events and allows you to view, analyze, and interpret collision data. A full profile of speed, RPMs, and acceleration values are presented in an all-in-one view.
Benefits
TripDAWG Collision Reconstruction offers:
- A fast and easy to use solution for analyzing collision data
- Optimize and simplifies the data into a simple dashboard
- Provides the necessary information to improve logistics and decision-making
- Provides a better understanding of the overall accident as it occurred by determining Point of Impact
- Increases overall fleet safety by reducing poor behavior in drivers
- Reduces potential accidents
If any of these benefits resonate with your organization and would improve your fleet insights and management, then give us a call today. We get help you get started with your TripDAWG telematics and accident reconstruction capabilities.

2290 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax
The 2290 Heavy Highway Use Tax deadline is August 31, 2021. There are always questions about who is affected and what to file. We’ll cover a few here but we encourage you to talk with one of our specialists. Adding and removing trucks, knowing how to pro-rate, and avoiding penalties can save you money.
2290 Form, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HHVUT) is to be filed and paid annually for every truck / tractor using public highways and weighs 55,000 or more lbs and travels over 5,000 miles. The 2290 is required for all registration renewals and must be paid anytime a new vehicle is added to your fleet for the remainder of that year. In this case the tax is due by the end of the month following the date the vehicle is first used on the public highways.
To file electronically, which we highly recommend, you will need your EIN (Employer Identification Number). A social security number does not suffice. Electronic submissions get a little complex if you need to add or remove a vehicle. You can claim tax credits for any vehicle that was sold or retired from your fleet. You can also claim credits if you filed for a vehicle but it was driven less that 5,000 miles.
Professional Filing Can Save You Money
VLC can make your 2290 filing smooth and painless. Our filing process navigates the complexities of the system while ensuring your filings are accurate and completed properly, avoiding any late fees or penalties. VLC files 2290’s electronically and will provide a stamped receipted copy to keep in your truck. VLC will also keep an electronic copy on file as a backup, which makes subsequent filings even faster.
We encourage you to contact VLC and let us do all the heavy lifting when it comes to filing your 2290 and all other required documents, which will allow you to focus on running your business. Whether you have one truck or thousands, VLC is here to help with all your licensing, fleet and driver compliance.
