The 2290 Heavy Highway Use Tax deadline is August 31, 2021. There are always questions about who is affected and what to file. We’ll cover a few here but we encourage you to talk with one of our specialists. Adding and removing trucks, knowing how to pro-rate, and avoiding penalties can save you money.
2290 Form, Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HHVUT) is to be filed and paid annually for every truck / tractor using public highways and weighs 55,000 or more lbs and travels over 5,000 miles. The 2290 is required for all registration renewals and must be paid anytime a new vehicle is added to your fleet for the remainder of that year. In this case the tax is due by the end of the month following the date the vehicle is first used on the public highways.
To file electronically, which we highly recommend, you will need your EIN (Employer Identification Number). A social security number does not suffice. Electronic submissions get a little complex if you need to add or remove a vehicle. You can claim tax credits for any vehicle that was sold or retired from your fleet. You can also claim credits if you filed for a vehicle but it was driven less that 5,000 miles.
